Community Member Spotlight: Blake Tiede

Meet Blake Tiede, a Graduate Research Engineer at Georgia Tech’s Aerospace Systems Design Lab and recent panelist at our TSQATL’s Space Soirée last fall. When Blake isn’t researching and modeling groundbreaking hybrid electric systems for small commuter aircrafts, he can be found playing aerospace-related computer games, doing drone photography, and exploring Atlanta.

Blake volunteered for the GT Tour Guides as an undergraduate student.

As part of our Community Member Spotlight series, we caught up with Blake about a favorite project of his, something about him that’s not listed in his resume, what excites him the most about what he’s studying in school, and one thing he’d tell others about Tech Square ATL (TSQATL) Social Club.

Blake graduated with a BS in Aerospace in 2019 and is a MSAE candidate for 2021.

Q: What's a favorite project of yours and why?

A: I am the president and re-founder of the Yellow Jacket Club, a new student-run organization that is sponsored by the Georgia Tech Athletic Association. We are a social organization that creates events and benefits for students surrounding Georgia Tech sports and traditions. Our membership dues support the Alexander-Tharpe fund, which is a GT athletics endowment fund. What’s really exciting to me is that it was originally founded in 1930 and re-established in 2020, so I’m looking forward to all the great things to come!

Q: What's something about you that's not on your resume?

A: I keep my three favorite cards in my wallet at all times: my Eagle Scout card, Scuba Diving Lisence, and a mini Georgia Tech Diploma card!

Q: What excites you the most about what you're studying in school?

A: I love how my masters degree at Georgia Tech has allowed me to customize my degree to a level beyond undergraduate. I take all the engineering and space design classes I want!

Q: What do you enjoy doing during your time off?

A: My aerospace habits spill over into my free time. I love playing Kerbal Space Program on my computer and doing drone photography. I also love traveling, exploring, and trying to get out around Atlanta as often as possible.

Q: What's one thing you would tell people about Tech Square ATL Social Club?

A: The community activities are really enjoyable. The Clubhouse itself is only a small part of the whole TSQATLSocial Club. I also love that I get to showcase my experience in their social activities and learn new things!

Q: What's your favorite restaurant/cafe in the Tech Square neighborhood?

A: There On Fifth! It has a great atmosphere and the bison burger is really good and affordable!
