Victory at Inaugural Collegiate Cup
Sixteen teams from eight different Georgia colleges and universities competed in the inaugural Collegiate Cup, held in Atlanta’s Tech Square. More than 40 mentors, judges, and volunteers came together to provide guidance to the 57 team members during the 48-hour competition.
The Collegiate Cup kicked off in The Garage at Tech Square as part of the Super Bowl 53 local host committee’s opening weekend, bringing together 58 college students across the state to vie for prizes across three categories: Coding, Case Study, and Design. Each category championship team went home with $750, while each People's Choice winning team won $250.
Produced by Sandbox Communities and HackGT, the Collegiate Cup partnered with Honeywell, Georgia Centers of Innovation, Georgia Tech’s Constellations Center for Equity in Computing, and the North Georgia Innovation Center to provide support over the weekend competition. Allowing college students to use their creativity and innovation to craft solutions that would help more people have access to computing education, created a true sense of purpose for the time and effort they put forth.
Giving the teams an additional level of excitement, the local Super Bowl 53 host committee provided Super Bowl Live VIP passes to all of the competitors, allowing them to experience the atmosphere surrounding the city.
Judging took place on Sunday and three teams emerged victorious as the 2019 State Champs:
Coding - MGA Knights from Middle Georgia State University
Online platform that educators can join to find and create CS related projects.
Design - Search Queeries from Georgia Tech
Interactive, multi-platform computer science workbook targeted towards raising awareness and exposure for preK-3rd grade girls.
Case Study - Hack for Georgia from Georgia Tech
Showed the potential for Constellations to be the catalyst for Georgia CS education through a combination of short and long term strategies.
