The Standup Show Redefining Startup Culture

Robert "RED" Daniel, a seasoned figure at ATDC as the FinTech Catalyst & Program Manager, has immersed himself in the vibrant startup ecosystem for years. However, his journey into blending comedy with entrepreneurship began unexpectedly, sparked by a familiar passion reignited in an old email from Gotham Comedy Club in New York City.

Having spent 15 years in New York and harboring a long-held desire to try stand-up comedy, RED enrolled in Gotham's month-long comedy program, which led him to perform several times on stage. This experience and deep involvement in startup initiatives led him to a unique idea: what if startup founders took the stage as comedians?

Despite initial challenges finding entrepreneur-comedians, RED's improvisational spirit came to the rescue during a pivotal presentation. Testing an improv technique with his audience, he struck gold — a concept that would evolve into "Standups & Startups," debuting at InnovATL 2023.

Standups & Startups is built on three pillars: comedy & improv, fostering culture, and nurturing community. Each event features 4-6 comedians, typically startup founders, showcasing their comedic talents. A standout event, "Pitches Get Stitches," blends networking with stand-up routines followed by an improv segment where founders humorously elevator pitch their businesses, easing the nerves of early-stage entrepreneurs facing investor presentations.

RED emphasizes creating a supportive community where founders can hone their comedic skills and gain confidence in public speaking and networking. "Life is serious, but sometimes we should take a break," he muses, reflecting on the program's mission to inject levity into the entrepreneurial journey.

RED's father's entrepreneurial influence is a source of personal pride. His father shaped his path and was a mentor and occasional intern in his ventures. From working his first job at 15 under his father's guidance to now sharing entrepreneurial insights, RED sees it as a full-circle moment, enriching his role as a catalyst for startup success.

The next edition of Standups & Startups is December 5. It is also their ATL Holiday 2024 Edition, a community holiday party open to all. Click here for more information.
