The History of AI

Over the years, with all the technological advancements, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has without a doubt been one of the biggest accomplishments of engineers everywhere.

Have you ever wondered who initially had this innovative idea? Keep on reading to find out more about the history of AI.

In the 1950s, Alan Turing explored the mathematical probability of artificial intelligence. Turing suggested that humans use reason and available information to solve problems and make decisions, so he questioned — why can't machines do the same?

At the time, Turing wasn’t able to test this because computers weren’t advanced enough and they couldn’t actually store any information., Not to mention, it was extremely expensive to have a computer — it could cost up to $200,000 a month to lease one in the 1950s.

After five years, the Logic Theorist, a program designed to mimic problem solving skills of humans, was created by Allen Newell, Cliff Shaw, and Herrbert Simon and initialized the proof of concept.

Over the new couple of years AI grew, computers became more accessible and had better storage, and machine learning algorithms improved, which also helped people better determine which algorithm to apply to their problem.

In the 1980s, AI received a boost in funding and deep learning was popularized.

Interestingly enough, during the 1990s and 2000s, when AI didn't have government funding or the hype of the public, AI boomed the most.

Now, we are at a time where we can gather huge amounts of data and AI has been able to touch multiple industries, such as entertainment, marketing, and banking.

Now that you are all caught up on the history of AI, why not learn more about what the future holds? The State of Innovation - AI, is being held on Wednesday, September 16 at 3 p.m. ET, with a few impressive panelists, including the Managing Director of the Southeast Applied Intelligence Lead at Accenture, Joe Depa.
