Robots and AI: Will The Future Be Automated?

Are robots going to take over the world? It has been seen in many sci-fi movies over the years: robots taking over the world, replacing humans left and right, and thus, the end of the human race as we know it. Sure, it’s a bit dramatic, but with recent articles such as Robots Use AI to Learn How to Clean Your House, and seeing robot lawn mowers at the Governor’s Mansion, we might not be far from a reality where robots become more than another helping hand.

Technology already has a strong presence in our homes, with things like personal assistant devices such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa, Roomba vacuums, smart appliances, and even vehicles that have the feature to be turned on from inside your home with a click of a button. Not to mention, machines have been making some jobs obsolete for centuries. According to the Times, one study estimates that about 400,000 jobs were lost to automation in U.S. factories from 1990 to 2007.

But are these types of tech getting out of hand?

For instance, last week Amazon Ring revealed their new camera, the Ring Always Home Cam indoor drone, which flies around your home through the designated route created by the user. Seems a bit extreme, but it is a unique way to keep an eye on your home (especially when you’re not there) through the Ring app.

The studies of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have grown exponentially over the years, giving us huge insights into big data. AI is creating new forms of analyzing data and many believe we are only scratching the surface when it comes to these subjects. In fact, AI is one of the biggest accomplishments of engineers everywhere.

Jonathan How, an aeronautics and astronautic professor at MIT is trying to use ML to help smart objects make each other smarter, which sounds pretty insane. Jonathan is looking to achieve a future in which robots will work together and learn from each other while doing so. (Inception, anyone?)

Will robots come together and take over the world, or will we just continue to create awesome tech that helps us more and more on a daily basis?

DID YOU KNOW?

At the beginning of this year Atlanta Ventures and Tech Square Labs raised $750K for robotic lawn maintenance startup Greenzie.
