Tech Square Tries: The Canteen

The Canteen is Tech Square’s micro food hall which opened this spring in the spot formerly occupied by business lunch favorite the Spence. Four dining options share counter space at the Canteen, but get food court out of your head: instead of fast food, think small-chain or independent offerings with more artisanal food. Food halls are good for a group of people to visit, giving everyone a variety of food options so they can get what they like the most. Our crew set out to try at least one thing from every vendor. Here’s what we found:

  • TGM Bagel

Bagels and coffee. This place is, not surprisingly, geared towards breakfast. Mika ordered the trout on an everything bagel and loved it. On the day we went, this stall closed at 3 pm.

  • Fred’s Meat & Bread:

We were impressed with the lunch special: a burger stack, fries, and a can of Coke for just under ten dollars. Hopefully the lunch special rotates, because there are a lot of good-looking options.

  • Yalla! Mediterranean

The minute steak flatbread took a little longer than one minute, but it was on our tray promptly. More importantly, it tasted good. Really good.

  •  Square Bar:

Cody - yes, he’s 21 - ordered The Diablo and had no complaints. For those less day-drinking inclined, Square Bar also whips up smoothies and fresh-pressed juices. Order them from TGM Bagel anytime before 3 pm.
